Staffordshire Police is continuing to appeal for witnesses after a man was stabbed in Stafford yesterday evening (14 May).
At 7pm, officers were called to Newport Road, near the golf club, following reports of violence.
The victim, a man in his 60s, had been walking in the Castlefields area from Redgrave Drive towards Stafford Castle when he was approached from behind and then assaulted by an unknown man.
A member of the public found the victim on a bench and raised the alarm.
Staffordshire Police attended the scene as did West Midlands Ambulance Service, the Midlands Air Ambulance and the National Police Air Service.
The victim was taken to hospital by ambulance and remains in a critical but stable condition.
Described as being in his mid to late 20s, the suspect is potentially of Eastern European heritage, of average build and was wearing dark clothing.
There is currently a significant police presence at the scene as officers conduct enquiries as part of the investigation.
Detectives are completing extensive CCTV and house-to-house enquiries while drones and the National Police Air Service helicopter are supporting the activities in the area.
Police are keen to speak to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Castlefields area between 5pm and 8pm yesterday.
Chief Inspector Saqib Butt, Stafford Borough local policing team commander, said: "We understand this is a highly worrying time for our communities and we are doing all we can to identify and apprehend the suspect.
"Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area before or after the assault should contact us as soon as possible.
"We would like to thank everyone who has provided information so far and we will continue our house-to-house enquiries today.
"We will be carrying out robust proactive patrols locally throughout the day to help reassure residents that we are there for them."
