Detectives investigating an attempted murder, near The Castle Golf and Leisure Club last week, have released CCTV footage of a man thought to be the suspect.

On Thursday 14 May, officers were called to Newport Road, after a man in his 60s was stabbed while walking in the Castlefields area from Redgrave Drive towards Stafford Castle.

The CCTV is from the Castlefields area at around 7pm shortly after the incident took place.

Officers are asking anyone who recognises the man or saw him that evening to make contact with police.

Detectives also want people to think about if anyone returned home with unexplained injuries or whose behaviour, either before or since the incident, has been out of character.

See CCTV above.

The victim remains in a stable but critical condition in hospital and specialist officers are continuing to support him and his family.

He was discovered on a bench after the attack by a member of the public.

The senior investigating officer leading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Ian Fitzgerald said: "This remains a fast-moving investigation, and we are progressing a significant number of enquiries.

"The response from the community has been tremendous and I am grateful to everyone who has already contacted us with information.

"Anyone with information, no matter how small it may seem, should contact us as it could be an important part of the investigation.

"The victim remains in a stable but critical condition so it's vital we identify this male as soon as possible.

"We understand this is concerning for the community.

"We're doing everything possible to identify and locate the person responsible.

"Specialist officers continue to carry out extensive enquiries including forensic examination, CCTV trawls, and detailed searches.

"An increased police presence remains in the area."
