The Met Office has issued Stafford with a yellow weather warning due to strong winds caused by Storm Austen.

It will be in place from 10am this morning (23 October) until 9pm.

Locals may experience short-term losses of power and some bus and train services may be affected with journeys taking longer.

Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges are also likely.

The Met Office said: "Whilst the winds across the warning area are not expected to be as strong as those further south and west, a spell of inland gales is possible with gusts around 45 to 55mph during Friday daytime.

"In combination with locally heavy rain and many trees still in full leaf, there is potential for some power outages and travel disruption."

For the best possible chance of avoiding delays, people should check road conditions (if driving), bus and train timetables.

Additionally, locals could consider gathering torches, batteries, mobile phone power banks and other essential items in case of a power cut.

It is also important to stay up to date with Met Office warnings which can be checked here.

Tips for staying safe in strong winds:

  • Make sure to secure loose outdoor items such as bins, plant pots and garden furniture
  • If driving somewhere take essentials such as warm clothing, a blanket, a torch, food, drink and a portable charger
  • Driving can be dangerous in strong winds. Drive slowly to minimise impact of wind gusts, be aware of high-side vehicles/caravans on exposed roads or when overtaking, hold the steering wheel firmly and leave more room than usual for cyclists, motorcyclists, lorries and buses
  • Stay indoors as much as possible. If venturing outside try not walk close to or shelter next to buildings or trees
