Step forward in major redevelopment at Stafford MOD site
By James Smith 26th Feb 2026
Council planners have given the green light to part of a major redevelopment at a Stafford Military of Defence (MOD) site.
Two applications for Beacon Barracks have been signed off by Stafford Borough Council.
The first will see a major new office building built across an existing car park as the MOD works to bring more personnel onto the Beaconside site.
"The proposals form part of a wider package of improvements across the existing military site which are being brought forward as part of the defence estate optimisation programme major investment programme," the application explained.
"The overall ambition of these proposals relates to the DIO's aim of accommodating the movement of personnel from several other barracks sites across the country to Beacon Barracks.
"It is noted however that each of the proposals at Beacon Barracks are to come forward independently, and they are not reliant upon each other to be delivered."
This first scheme will see a 70 metre by 16.6 metre building built across the car park.
It will leave just 15 of the 106 existing spaces.
The local authority has also given prior approval for seven other buildings on site to be demolished.
This will allow for another application for two new buildings - offices and stores - to be submitted.
"In terms of site restoration it is clear that the intention in the long-term is to redevelop the site, with new buildings proposed via a separate application," a council report said.
"The new buildings proposed would be assessed under this separate application.
"It is stated that any material that is deemed non-hazardous and recyclable will be stockpiled in the footprint of the proposed new buildings."
