A Staffordshire-based filmmaker has created a brand new documentary showcasing the work of local artist Julia Ellen Humphrey.

Ben Causier, created documentary film 'Layers of Memory' while studying his Level 3 extended diploma in Film, TV and Creative Media Production at Stafford College.

The project was recently awarded "Best Documentary" at end of year college celebrations.

Ben has now produced an extended feature-length version, which he will soon be screening at venues across the county.

Julia Ellen Humphrey is a mixed media artist from Staffordshire.

She has previously exhibited at the Ancient High House, Lichfield Library, and Shugborough Hall.

The film focuses on many different aspects of Julia's artist journey from her school days to her experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ben said: "It's kind of all reflecting on her life, her journey, how she started out and where she is now.

"It's to inspire others in the area, whether that be school students, individuals or other artists watching the documentary to put themselves out there."

Shugborough Estate acts as the backdrop to the documentary, as when she isn't painting Julia is a member of the National Trust team at the property.

Working closely with Ben on the documentary, Julia advised on music choices and helped the film to take shape.

Ben said: "Julia is centred so deeply into Staffordshire that the documentary isn't just about the artist or the artwork.

"It's a love letter to the local landscapes and the creative spirits who thrive in Stafford.

"I think, especially as a filmmaker, when you encounter a subject with as much depth and resilience as Julia, you have to tell their story and I think we've managed to do that."
