'Short term pain for long term gain' says MP as Sandon Road closes for installation of flood reducing valve

Sandon Road has been closed this week as part of an effort to reduce repeated flooding in the area.
Earlier this year, it was announced that the Sandon Road Flooding Taskforce, which is made up of of local residents and businesses, Severn Trent, the Environment Agency, Staffordshire County Council, Stafford Borough Council and local MP Leigh Ingham, had been working together to find ways to tackle the flooding and find a long-term solution.
Part of the Taskforce's plan involved the installation of a non-return valve.
This would prevent water from flowing back onto the road and limit the number of times the street must close after heavy rainfall.
However, a valve could not be installed with immediate effect because of weather conditions.

In an earlier statement she said: "The bad news is that to carry out this work, Sandon Road will need to be closed for around five days.
"I am as frustrated with roadworks as all of you, but in this case, I believe it is short term pain for long term gain if it means fewer flood-related closures in future."
The valve will not solve the problem entirely but should significantly improve the current issues.
Vegetation has been cut down around Sandyford Brook which should also reduce flooding and extra funding has been secured meaning improvements can continue to be made.
The Taskforce is currently in discussions about how best to spend the funding.
