Staffordshire Police have arrested a man in connection with the attempted murder near The Castle Golf and Leisure Club last week.

The victim, a man in his 60s, was stabbed while walking in the Castlefields area on Thursday (14 May).

It has now been announced that police have arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the investigation.

The man was initially arrested on Monday (18 May) on suspicion of criminal damage and public order offences and remains in custody.

Police have been appealing for witnesses since the attack and released CCTV footage believed to be of the suspect earlier this week.

Further CCTV images have now been released having been submitted by a member of the public following a previous appeal.

The images show a man, believed to be the suspect, before the attack at 6.36pm and then in a nearby street after the attack at 7pm.

Staffordshire Police are now interested in anything from Newport Road towards the Highfields area.

Anyone who recognises the man or has CCTV should contact the police.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Fitzgerald said: "Our investigation is moving at pace, and I want to thank those members of the public who have already helped us.

"The clearer CCTV we are releasing today was provided because of earlier appeals, which shows the real difference the community can make.

"But we still need your help to identify the man and would ask anyone who recognises him to get in touch as even the smallest detail could prove significant.

"We understand the impact this violent attack has had within the community and that it can impact feelings of safety.

"Local officers remain in the area to offer support, and the scene remains in place as a specialist search team continue their work."
