Penkridge Parish Church celebrates 800th anniversary

Rumoured to have been visited by Elizabeth I, St Michael and All Angels Church in Penkridge is marking its 800th Birthday with a series of special events.

On Saturday, 18 April, the church opened its doors, inviting visitors to learn about the history of the parish.

Bell ringing demonstrations, tours and talks took place throughout the day with volunteers being on hand to answer any burning questions.

The current church was constructed in 1226 by the Archbishop of Dublin, however religious buildings have been situated on the site since the Anglo-Saxon period.

St Michael's was originally a Royal chapel which meant it was set aside for the use of monarchs, however during the Reformation much of the church's roof and stained glass was destroyed.

This turbulent time in British history is captured by some Tudor graffiti on the building's exterior wall which reads "Henry VIII freed us".

The church then became the responsibility of the Littleton family who had great influence over the Penkridge community for many centuries, even as recently as 1990.

Greg Yerbury has been the Vicar at St Michael's for the past 14 years.

One of his favourite features of the church is a World War One battle cross marking the death of Cecil Littleton.

Vicar Greg said: "This was made for him on the battleside and most of the battleside crosses were destroyed but this one survived".

He added that it is "unusual" because it is "highly decorated" and most battle crosses were "very plain".

Today, St Michael's offers assistance to refugees and hosts a weekly safe space where people can enjoy coffee and cake.

Vicar Greg said: "We offer support to the congregation.

"We also offer practical help.

"We have been worshipping here for over 1000 years on this site and we still continue to do that."

The celebrations will resume this Saturday (25 April) when the church will again open its doors to the public.

Special guided tours will be taking place at 11am and 2pm.
