Earlier today (22 June), Keir Starmer resigned as Prime Minister after beginning his tenure almost two years ago on 5 July 2024.

Starmer said: "The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election.

"I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question.

"And I accept that answer with good grace.

"Every decision I've taken has been about putting the country I love first.

"That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party."

Starmer says that he will now focus on being the "best husband" and the "best dad" he can be.

Leigh Ingam, MP for Stafford, Eccleshall and the villages, issued the following statement: "I am incredibly grateful to Keir Starmer for leading the party to form the first Labour Government in a generation.

"As the product of a previous one, I know what that means to the families and young people in this country.

"He undoubtedly leaves this country in a better state than he inherited it, and has done so during a time of significant international challenges.

"However, the results of May's elections and recent by-elections sent a clear message on how the electorate feels about the first two years of this Government.

"Part of being a good leader is knowing when it is time to step aside, and I agree with the Prime Minister's decision to set out a plan for his departure.

"I am pleased this will be measured, practical, and managed in the best interests of our country.

"I will always stand by Keir's mantra of country first.

"We must deliver on our 2024 promises: make this country fairer, safer, and better for working people.

"We have three years left to show the electorate that we are the party that can deliver this change.

"We have to be bold, act fast, and listen to feedback."

"I want to say a huge thank you to Keir Starmer for everything he has done for the country, the Labour Party, and for the people of Stafford, Eccleshall, and the villages.

"It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with him over the last few years."
