Last chance for residents to comment on potential Stafford Town Council this Sunday
By Livia Gregor 17th Mar 2026
Stafford residents are being asked to share their opinions on the potential formation of a town council.
The debate follows Government plans to abolish Stafford Borough Council in 2028.
Every area of the borough, apart from Stafford, is currently covered by a town or parish council.
A parish or town council is the most local form of government and is responsible for services such as park management and the running of events.
They also make representations on behalf of the communities they represent, on planning applications and other local issues.
According to the National Association of Parish Councils, town and parish councils can give residents a stronger voice in local affairs, enhance public services, can attract funding unavailable to larger councils and provide greater accountability as councils are in closer contact with residents.
Before a new town or parish council can be created, a Community Governance Review must be undertaken.
A review began on 9 February 2026.
Stafford Borough Council stated:
"There will be a consultation period of six weeks during which time everyone is invited to submit proposals and comments for consideration by us before Draft Recommendations are prepared on future electoral arrangements for Stafford Town by a working group of borough councillors."
The consultation period will end on Sunday 22 March so anyone with an opinion they would like to share should submit their comments as soon as possible.
