Discover the history ‘hidden’ in the walls of the Ancient High House
By Livia Gregor 9th Apr 2026
An exhibition, currently on display at the Ancient High House, is exploring the lives of the building's previous residents by piecing together clues they left behind.
From scraps of wallpaper to markings and graffiti, the house's walls hold many "hidden" secrets.
Staff at Historic Stafford have been tirelessly researching these artifacts to find out more about the High House's occupants over the last 400 years.

Assistant Heritage Manager, Amy Edwards, said "We wanted to tell stories of the house, of the hidden features you don't normally notice whilst you're walking around.
"It is things that were created by people in the house, the marks were created by them, the wallpaper was chosen and put up by people connected to this house.
"All of the items on display are from our own collection apart from one of the replica items which we have borrowed.
"The wallpaper fragments, timber pieces and daub were all once part of the walls of this house."

Some of the wallpaper at The Ancient High House dates back to the 1700s.
One of the items on display is a video of some students, who lived in the property in the 1960s, holding a seance.
In the footage, they are attempting to summon a ghost known as 'George'.
While the project was being researched, one of the students from the video visited the museum by chance.
Amy said: "It was just a complete coincidence, but it was really interesting for us because we got to hear his [the student's] side of the story and we found out a lot more information."
The If Walls Could Talk exhibition is free and will finish on Thursday 21 May.
