Historic Stafford seeks volunteers for intriguing new research projects

Two new research projects, which will be launched by Historic Stafford later this month, offer local people the chance to be part of preserving Stafford's history for the next generation.
From Charles I to famous prisoners to fashion, the Civil War Room Project aims to transform the Civil War display at the Ancient High House.
Research will be mostly desk-based with exciting opportunities to make site-based visits and spend time at Staffordshire Record Office.
Historic Stafford said: "Volunteering gives you the chance to meet new people and spend meaningful time in historic places.
"We are looking to update and change the current information and displays in our Civil War Room, in order to share some of the untold stories of the house with our visitors."
The project will last for 14 weeks, beginning on 28 April.
Volunteers are expected to spend at least four hours per week conducting research.
Research topics include:
- The house's role as an Officers' Prison
- The role of women
- Life as a servant
- King Charles I's visit to Stafford
- The strategic role of Stafford town in the Civil War
- Food
- Fashion
The second project focuses on Alderman Thomas Sidney who was born above where Caffè Nero stands on Gaolgate Street today and went on to become the Mayor of London.
Historic Stafford said: "The aim of the project is to find out more information about Thomas Sidney, his life and his family.
"We would also like to find out about his links to Stafford and the people of the town, as well as any family links that may have remained beyond his lifetime."
Applicants for both projects should have some prior research experience, be happy to work independently and be confident using computers.
Applications close on 18 April.
