A suspected Second World War bomb, discovered at a Staffordshire quarry earlier this week, has been safely detonated.

Police were called to the scene at around 8:40am on Tuesday (4 August) following reports of a possible unexploded item being found.

After the bomb was identified, the quarry, which is located on Walton Lane in the Barton-under-Needwood area, was evacuated and a cordon put in place.

Yesterday (6 August), a controlled explosion was carried out by specialists from Explosive Ordnance Disposal.

Staffordshire Police posted the following statement yesterday evening: "A controlled explosion has been carried out by specialists from Explosive Ordnance Disposal on the suspected WW2 bomb at a quarry in the Barton-under-Needwood area this evening.

"The cordon has been reduced from 900m to 200m, which will be removed fully this evening.

"A small number of residents who had been evacuated are returning to their properties.

"The A38, and other closed roads, will be re-opened to traffic."
