A team of firefighters, including ten from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, will travel to Atlanta to participate in a special memorial event to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

343 firefighters, the same number of firefighters who lost their lives on September 11 2001, will be climbing 110 floors (the height of the World Trade Centre), to remember those who died in the tragedy.

Staffordshire fireman Bob Mortimer will be tackling a memorial step challenge in Southampton on 11 July in preparation for the Atlanta event.

Bob will be climbing 110 floors inside St Mary's Stadium, home of Southampton FC, accompanied by emergency services staff from across the country.

Speaking about the challenge he said: "It is an honour to take part in the 9/11 memorial event this year to mark the 25th anniversary.

"343 firefighters gave their lives that day and it will be a privilege to complete the climb alongside international colleagues.

"The Southampton challenge in July is a family event and I will be raising money for various charities including The Blue Light Card Foundation and The Fire Fighters Charity."
