In January, it was announced that 44 branches of Santander would close across the country by the end of 2027 with many of the outlets due to shut in April and May of this year.

The list included Stafford's Santander, located in Market Square, which is set to close on 19 May at 3pm.

According to the bank: "We last did a major review of our branches in 2024. 

"Since then, our customers are choosing to use mobile, online and telephone banking more, and branches less."

Prior to reaching the decision to close the branch, Santander said that they looked at "the way our Stafford branch customers are choosing to bank with us" and " the availability of other ways to bank in the local area, such as the Post Office, ATMs and Banking Hubs". 

They also considered the proximity of other branches and the impact closure would have on staff.

The review found that 91% of customers already bank in a variety of different ways including visiting the bank in person, online or by mobile. 

It also discovered that 17% of customers use more than one branch and that "98% of residents living in the local authority area have access to superfast broadband coverage."

The nearest Santander bank to Stafford following the closure will be Wolverhampton which is almost 20 miles away, an approximately 46-minute journey on public transport. 

Customers can alternatively use the Walsall branch.

A community banker will be visiting Stafford on behalf of the bank on a weekly basis, however the location, time and date are yet to be confirmed.

Santander said: "We're aware of the impact of this decision, and will be here for you in person until this branch closes. 

"We can offer support and answer any questions, so that you can make an informed decision on alternative ways to bank."
