Stafford MP raises concerns over post office closure in Parliament

A Staffordshire MP has raised concerns over the potential closure of a 'vital' post office in Parliament.
Stafford MP Leigh Ingham told the House of Commons that the Morrisons Daily in the Highfields area of Stafford is among the 100 convenience stores that the retailer is planning to close.
The store hosts the local post office, meaning the community could face a double hit if it were to close – the next nearest post office in Rising Brook is around a mile away and open for shorter hours.
Ms Ingham, who has held talks with Morrisons and the Post Office on the issue, called for a Commons debate on the role of local post offices and the need for them to be as accessible as possible.
She said: "Morrisons has proposed closing its shop in Highfields, which hosts the local post office. Closing it would remove a vital service from our community, which people rely on every day for banking and bill payments.
"For many residents—particularly older people and those without access to a car—the nearest alternative in Rising Brook is not a realistic option; it is also open for much shorter hours, which would not serve the needs of many of my constituents. I have already met Morrisons and the Post Office to raise these points."
Ms Ingham said a parliamentary debate on the subject would allow MPs to discuss the impact of post office closures in their areas.
Leader of the House Sir Alan Campbell said he recognised the impact of post office closures on communities, and encouraged Ms Ingham to apply for an adjournment debate on the issue.
He also said the government had this week opened a call for evidence as part of its access to banking services review.
Morrisons announced in May that it planned to close 100 loss-making stores over the coming months, blaming government policies such as the increases to the national living wage and National Insurance.
The affected stores, including the Highfields branch, were acquired from McColl's in 2022 after the firm went into administration.
