Hidden away in the county's archives, a special commemorative booklet records the names of men from Stafford who served in World War One.

Beginning on 28 July 1914 and finishing on 11 November 1918, the First World War led to the deaths of an estimated 17 million soldiers and civilians.

Produced in around 1920, 'Stafford's Roll of Service in the Great War', is a pamphlet honouring those who fought in the conflict.

The booklet lists the men who served alphabetically by surname, giving details of rank, unit and home address in Stafford.

Extra information is provided about those who were wounded, gassed, died on active service or were killed in action.

Dedicated to the 'Mothers of brave Stafford lads who fell in the Great War', the booklet was compiled through public appeals including adverts in local newspapers and at local cinemas, businesses and schools.

The pamphlet foreword specifically thanks "Mr and Miss Everton of the Picture House" and "Mr G. B. Tayton of the Picture Palace" who " kindly displayed, free of charge on their screens, notices which materially helped to bring the matter before the public".

It also offers condolences to the "mothers, wives and sweethearts" of those who were killed adding that "the deepest sympathy of the whole town is conveyed through the medium of this booklet".

The document makes reference to Private J. H. Stretton, of the 1st North Staffordshire Regiment, who was the first Stafford soldier whose death was reported during the war.

Private Stretton was killed in Belgium on 13 October 1914.
