Road traffic accidents in Staffordshire have increased by 21 per cent over last three years, an FOI has revealed.

A freedom of information request (FOI), submitted to Staffordshire Police by Accident Claims Advice, has revealed that more than 4,000 road traffic accidents have been reported in Staffordshire between 2023 and 2025.

There has been a 21.16 per cent rise in reports over the three-year period, with 1,432 reports in 2023 increasing to 1,735 during 2025.

A total of 4,772 accidents were recorded in that timeframe, with 1,605 also documented in 2024.

While other areas noted higher totals (Thames Valley alone reported a 69,539 road traffic accidents for the same period), Staffordshire's upswing of more than 21 per cent represents a significant three-year increase.

The FOI also revealed that 40 people charged for road traffic accidents over the past three years: 18 in 2023, 12 the following year and 10 in 2025.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "In the last three years, in line with national trends, we have seen an increase in the number of collisions reported to us.

"We're continuing to work proactively to ensure every step is made to prevent collisions before they take place, which involves educational operations, investing in new technology and encouraging people to report offences on the road to us, working in partnership with our communities and local authorities to address any concerns as well as pursue prosecutions.

"Collisions where there may be an offence involved can be dealt with by an out of court disposal, such as a fixed penalty notice, conditional offer or even a retraining course.

"But, where criminality is involved on our roads, we will take action. As a result of this proactive work, in the last 12 months, our Serious Collision Investigation Unit has taken positive action; successfully securing charges in 95 per cent of serious or fatal collision-related offences.

"We continue to do all we can to prevent collisions on our roads and protect the public from harm, particularly reducing the impact of the 'fatal four' – speeding, driving under the influence, not wearing a seatbelt, and using a mobile phone."

Staffordshire Police also directed people towards their website for further road safety advice.

Road Traffic Accident Manager for JF Law, Tracy Chick, said: "Road traffic accidents are not only distressing for those involved - they can also have potentially life-changing repercussions.

"Driving is part of everyday life for many of us, but it can also be dangerous. While speeding and driving under the influence bring obvious concerns, external factors such as treacherous weather conditions or simple distractions can prove to be the difference between an easy journey and a serious incident.

"It's incumbent on all of us to take care, be observant and obey traffic laws - one quick slip could have dramatic, lasting consequences for you or someone you love.

"We can all be the difference in making Britain's roads safer."
