Refurbished sensory room enhancing the wellbeing of patients at St George’s Hospital

Last month, a special sensory room was launched to help improve patient wellbeing at a hospital in Stafford.

The room is located at Norbury House, a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at St George's Hospital.

Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT) staff based at Norbury House, hosted an open day to commemorate the room's refurbishment.

MPFT said: "The room is equipped with a series of sensory features, including an interactive floor projector, LED lighting and hurricane tube, an infinity wall light, egg chair, beanbag, and sequined tactile wall panel.

"The unit has also refurbished its de-escalation suite, adding an interactive screen, padded bench, beanbag, chalk wall, LED lighting and other furniture.

"Norbury House provides treatment for patients who require additional support during their recovery that cannot be delivered in open inpatient wards.

"It recently received Quality Network for Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (QNPICU) accreditation for its excellent standards of care, which includes the sensory room."

Stephanie Haig, Advanced Occupational Therapist, said: "It was a lovely open day event that enabled staff and patients to explore the new sensory facility at Norbury House, learn more about the equipment and features within the room, and discover how it can support wellbeing, relaxation and engagement of our patients.
