Film lovers have the opportunity to attend a selection of special screenings in Stafford and the surrounding area as part of the Pocket Film Festival.

The popular event returns from 25 September to 4 October giving people the chance to enjoy a varied programme of film events in the heart of Staffordshire and beyond.

Event organisers, Unseen Cinema, formed in 2014 and began running pop-up film events in Stafford, particularly in the historic courtroom at the Shire Hall.

Speaking about how the festival was created, director Owen Hurcombe said: "We worked with Flatpack: Assemble, a year-round outreach project by the Flatpack Festival (backed by the BFI Film Audience Network) designed to help venues and community groups develop film culture across the West Midlands and wider region.

"As part of this initiative, Flatpack collaborated with Unseen Cinema and Staffordshire County Council to help us launch the Pocket Film Festival in Stafford."

The festival is supported by Film Hub Midlands through funds from the National Lottery.

According to Owen: "The Pocket Film Festival gives people a chance to experience film culture on their doorstep.

"The festival will host over fourteen specialised film events which will include enhanced screenings with live musical accompaniment, archive films and documentaries, short-film programmes, independent film, British film, and classic films.

"It is important to have events like these in Stafford and across Staffordshire as they help to tackle social and geographic barriers, and improve access to screen culture for people across Stafford and beyond.

"By delivering more screenings and events in local venues it provides our audiences with an opportunity to engage with film performances and activities not widely accessible across Staffordshire."

Owen curated the festival programme using audience feedback and working in partnership with festival funders, venues and community partners.

He also collaborates with artists to bring to life enhanced screenings such as those with musical accompaniment.

House pianist for the BFI, Meg Morley, will be performing piano accompaniment to John Ford's 'Three Bad Men' and 1920s animation 'The Adventures of Prince Achmed' as part of the festival.

There will also be a screening of 'Stand by Me' and 'The Christophers' starring Ian McKellen as well as free pop-up events and a short film night.

The festival with close with a screening of Faust with live organ accompaniment provided by Darius Battiwalla.

Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, the film tells the story of a man who sells his soul to the devil to gain superpowers.
