A man in his thirties has been jailed after sexually assaulting a young girl in Stafford.

Simon David Evans, 39, of no fixed abode, was handed a six-year extended prison sentence at Stafford Crown Court on Friday (18 September) after being found guilty of sexual assault of a girl under 13 and four counts of assault a girl under 13 by touching.

Officers began investigating after a family member of the survivor contacted police.

A short time later, Evans was arrested and questioned in custody where he denied the offences.

As part of his sentencing, Evans was issued with a 15-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Detective Inspector Hayley Eaton, from the child protection unit, said: "I'd like to commend the victim for her bravery in coming forward and telling someone what happened.

"I'm happy that we've secured justice for her and I hope this serves as an example to anyone who may be a victim of sexual assault that we will take action and pursue offenders.

"Victims can be assured that we are here to support them as much as we can, no matter how recent the offences may be."
