Local roads ‘worse than ever’ says Staffordshire councillor
By Livia Gregor 14th Apr 2026
A local councillor has declared that Staffordshire's roads are "arguably worse than ever".
This evening, Cllr Scott Spencer will address his fellow councillors calling out the condition of the area's roads and will suggest that Stafford Borough Council pressures its county colleagues to improve the situation.
In a question published in advance of tonight's full council meeting, Cllr Spencer wrote: "The state of our roads is arguably worse than ever and in many areas unsafe for passage.
"This council approved a road emergency motion over a year ago, to which we had no satisfactory response or, certainly for rural roads, little demonstrable long-term actions or solutions from the administration at the time."
In September 2024, the borough council passed a road emergency motion as councillors believed that roads across the county were in a "worryingly poor state of repair" and that the situation had reached "breaking point".
The council said at the time: "Road users risk damage to their vehicles and injury to themselves travelling on our roads and it is unacceptable."
Some of the issues included the damage to certain roads being so bad that motorists were choosing to take longer, alternative routes which was having a negative impact on the environment and that repairs were often "poor quality".
Cllr Spencer's question continued: "Following the change of county council administration, can the leader of the council contact the county council, resubmit the borough's road emergency motion and reaffirm the significant safety concerns for all road users arising from the lack of discernible action and request a defined plan for the situation to be addressed?"
