Progress continues to be made in the effort to extinguish a fire at Cannock Chase which started on Wednesday (5 August).

The number of crews needed continues to be reduced and the fire has now been brought under control.

However, it is thought that firefighters will continue to work at the scene over the weekend and into Monday (10 August).

Efforts are being made to dampen down hotspots and prevent any further re-ignition which is a risk due to the dry weather.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Jim Bywater said: "Our fire crews have worked tremendously hard over the last few days to bring this fire under control as quickly as possible and prevent further spread.

"While I'd like to recognise their efforts, I'd also like to extend a thank you to our local partners who have all pulled together to help contain this fire, which could've easily spread beyond control and caused significant damage to the local area.

"We continue to receive support from the NFU, Severn Trent Water, Cannock Chase District Council, Staffordshire County Council and the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust.

"I'd also like to say a thank you to the countless comments and positive messages we've received online from the local community."

An inspection into the cause of the fire will be carried out when it is safe to do so.
