Grey becomes Stoke and Staffordshire’s most popular car colour after sharp rise in sales

Grey has now been Swansway Motor Group's most popular car colour for seven consecutive years, closely reflecting the wider UK trend where it has led nationally for eight years.
Across the Group in 2025, grey accounted for 31.8% of all retail sales, up from 31% in 2024, reinforcing its dominance in the UK's car colour rankings.
Over the last decade, the volume of grey vehicles sold by Swansway has increased by 168%, underlining just how firmly the shade has taken hold.

In Stoke and Staffordshire, grey made up 33% of all retail sales in 2025, up from 30% the previous year, confirming it as the region's most popular choice.
However, the picture isn't uniform. In the ST21 postcode, grey represented just 19% of sales in 2025, down from 25% in 2024, making it one of the least grey leaning areas locally.
While grey leads, other colours are shifting too. Green saw the biggest growth across Swansway in 2025, rising 94% year on year, more than double the national average increase of 46%.
In contrast, red recorded the sharpest decline among the top 10 colours, falling by 12%, while silver has dropped 36% over the past decade, signalling a long term move away from traditional metallic colours.
John Smyth, Director at Swansway Motor Group, said:
"Grey continues to dominate because it offers a modern look and strong resale appeal.
"What's fascinating is seeing growth in colours like green at the same time, which suggests drivers are starting to balance safe choices with something a bit more distinctive."
The data is based on Swansway Motor Group's retail sales and excludes fleet, trade and Motability vehicles.
